Winemaker's Notes:
The 2017 growing season was one for the record books, featuring everything from drought-ending winter rains to late summer heat events. It began with the wettest winter in nearly two decades, combined with an extended dormancy thanks to a sufficiently cold winter. This period of rest allowed the vines to recover from five years of intense activity, leading to a later-than-usual budbreak. Although the late spring and early summer were marked by fluctuating conditions—unlike more consistent “goldilocks” years—the well-managed crop thrived under generally warm conditions.
Initially, the 2017 Staglin Cabernet is a bit reticent and brooding. However, with a swirl and a bit of air, it comes alive in a dynamic display of red and black fruit, enriched by earthy notes, resinous woods, and aromatic herbs. The wine opens with a burst of tar-tinged boysenberry and black cherry, flowing seamlessly into a textured mid-palate featuring star anise-infused cassis and molasses-drizzled warm figs. These flavors are enhanced by hints of camphor, seasoned alder, and a touch of hyssop. The result is a surprisingly approachable and finely-grained wine, offering immense enjoyment even at this early stage.
