Sarmassa is exposed to the south-east, on the side of a hill with a good slope. Although the surrounding area dates back to the Tortonian geological age, the soil here has typical Serravallian characteristics, also because the slope led to abundant surface runoff: it is a predominantly silt-clay soil, very firm, with a significant percentage of stones. The abundance of stones, associated with clay, limits the vegetative growth of the Nebbiolo grape variety and makes the vines quickly feel the effects of variations in climate, thus favoring the perfect ripening of the grapes.

Grape Varietals:

100% Nebbiolo

Organoleptic  characteristics:

The color is a vivid garnet red. The aroma is intense, with clear scents of dog rose, vanilla, liquorice and spices, and a vague hint of pine resin and tobacco. Full and elegant taste, good body, prominent tannins. Pleasant spicy and woody notes that merge perfectly together.

Food Pairings:

It goes well with traditional egg pastas from the Langhe (tajarin and Angolotti del Plin), with roasts, boiled meats, braised meats and game. It is ideal for sipping alongside goat cheeses and hard ripened cheeses.

96 Points - This Barolo frames a stunning nose with intense, captivating rose perfume, chamomile tea, earl gray and tarte tatin. The palate is chewy and structured from every side, the confident tannins pushing the fruit inwards and compressing layers of lively red fruit with panache and style. Mineral yet fruity on the finish, and very long.

93 Points - Aromas of dark-skinned berry, coconut, French oak and blue flower lead the nose. On the tense taut palate, fine-grained tannins accompany ripe plum, dried cherry, vanilla and coffee bean while fresh acidity keeps it balanced. Drink 2024–2036."

92 Points - The Marchesi di Barolo 2016 Barolo Sarmassa delivers a solid and powerful presentation with aromas of dark cherry and plum backed by smoked meat, tobacco and savory spice. It ages in both French and Slavonian oak for two years The Sarmassa cru, from a southeast-facing slope sitting at about 350 meters in altitude, delivers intensity and bold fruit flavors with licorice, smoke and chalky mineral of the bouquet, this wine is subdued in terms of mouthfeel. There is a point of tannic tightness on the close, but the mouthfeel is soft overall, treading lightly on the palate."
